Tensions in Europe provoked not so much by Russia as by Ukrainian forces in Donbas, U.S. claims of coming war - Peskov

MOSCOW. Feb 15 (Interfax) - Tensions in Europe are being provoked by the huge number of Ukrainian forces deployed along the Donbas contact line and U.S. claims of a coming war, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"The Kremlin believes that tensions in Europe are being provoked not only and not so much by Russian forces deployed on Russian territory. They are provoked by a huge number of Ukrainian troops on the contact line and every sign that suggests the possibility of a military operation in Donbas. They are provoked by U.S. claims of a coming war," Peskov said at a press briefing on Tuesday.

"These tensions are provoked by multiple sources. Perhaps, it would not be right to say that something must be done by Russia," he said.

Journalists asked Peskov to comment on a statement by German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz who said he was expecting Russia to send a de-escalation signal.

"Let us wait and see. I think Olaf Scholz will tell a press conference what he means by a signal," Peskov said.
