Response on security guarantees, generally approved by Putin, to be upgraded, sent to U.S., NATO - Lavrov (Part 2)

MOSCOW. Feb 15 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has generally approved Russia's response to the United States and NATO regarding security guarantees, and this response will soon be upgraded and sent to the addressees, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"I briefed President Putin yesterday and underlined that our proposals, which he had approved in general and which would soon be upgraded and sent to the U.S. and NATO partners, were based on the integrity of the Russian posture," Lavrov said at a press conference on Tuesday, following talks with Polish Foreign Minister, OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Zbigniew Rau.

The steps mentioned in the Russian response "obviously have a practical value for de-escalation," he said.

"However, these steps will be effective if they rest upon a solid legal foundation, first and foremost, an interpretation of the indivisible security principle, which our Western colleagues are shamelessly distorting and presenting exclusively as a freedom to choose military alliances," Lavrov said.
