If UK sanctions legislation takes effect, Russian parliament to have reasons to pass identical document - Lavrov

MOSCOW. Feb 16 (Interfax) - If amendments to the United Kingdom legislation toughening sanctions on Russia take effect, Russian lawmakers will have every reason to pass an identical document targeting the UK, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"I've heard there are still some procedures ahead there, and if this legislation ultimately takes effect, I have no doubts that our parliament will have every reason to pass analogous legislation with regard to those who are trying to build careers for themselves, score ratings, and inflate their popularity by walking the Russophobic path - and actually it will have to be done," Lavrov said at a press conference in Moscow on Wednesday.

Moscow "is aware how much London is accustomed to and likes to play an instigator role in relations between Russia and the West," he said.

"I do hope that the other Western countries prove to be more responsible players able to detect this attempt to provoke new waves of sanction wars and won't support it," Lavrov said.
