No escalation expected around Ukraine next week or next month - Russian envoy to EU

MOSCOW. Feb 16 (Interfax) - There are no grounds for an escalation of tensions around Ukraine in the foreseeable future, and the detente process will not take a long time if the West heeds Russia's concerns, Russian Permanent Representative to the European Union Vladimir Chizhov said.

"Wars in Europe rarely start on Wednesdays... This may not be a strong enough guarantee, but I can assure you that, as far as Russia is concerned, there will be no attack this coming Wednesday," Chizhov said in an interview with Die Welt.

Chizhov's remarks from the interview are available on the Facebook account of the Russian permanent mission to the EU.

"Nor will there be any escalation next week or the week after, or next month. Moreover, if our partners finally listen to our legitimate concerns, a process of detente will not be long in coming, in the interest of all the Europeans from Lisbon to Vladivostok, as well as all other nations of the world," he said.
