Russian Northern Fleet conducts anti-submarine drills in Barents Sea

SEVEROMORSK. Feb 17 (Interfax) - Russia's Northern Fleet has conducted an exercise in the Barents Sea to practice searching for and destroying an enemy submarine, the fleet's press service said on Wednesday.

"The Severomorsk large anti-submarine ship carried out a set of procedures to hunt for an enemy submarine, whose role was played by a Northern Fleet nuclear submarine, force it to surface, and imitate its destruction," it said.

"At the same time, the Northern Fleet nuclear submarines practiced underwater maneuvers, the employment of hydro-acoustic weaponry in active search mode, and an algorithm of actions for detecting and attacking an underwater opponent during a sub-on-sub engagement," it said.

The exercise did not involve the actual firing of torpedoes.

"Crews also practiced measures to ensure the absence of surveillance over naval forces, searching for foreign submarines, and controlling navigation in the Barents Sea," it said.
