Russian warships fire missiles during exercise in Sea of Okhotsk

MOSCOW. Feb 17 (Interfax) - The Russian Pacific Fleet warships fired air defense systems and downed a mock enemy's cruise missile during an exercise in the Sea of Okhotsk, the fleet press service said on Thursday.

"Consistent with the exercise scenario, the Gromky and Aldar Tsydenzhapov corvettes of the Pacific Fleet spotted mock enemy ships headed towards the Russian territorial waters. The corvettes tried to contact the suspected trespassers, yet the mock enemy fired a Malakhit training missile at the Pacific Fleet ships," the press service said.

Once the missile launch was detected, the corvettes locked the target and fired a Redut air defense missile system, it said.

"The training missile came under attack of 100mm A-190 artillery systems upon entering the kill zone of the shipborne artillery," the press service said.

The Iney corvette of the Pacific Fleet impersonated the mock enemy.

"The corvettes trained the complete sequence of air defense operations, including electronic countermeasures," the press service said.

More than 20 warships and support ships, as well as planes and helicopters of marine aviation are taking part in the Pacific Fleet exercise in the Sea of Okhotsk.

Poliment-Redut is a new seaborne air defense missile system designed and built by Almaz-Antey. This is a weapon of Russia's next-generation frigates and corvettes.
