Commanders of Western, Eastern Military Districts become Colonel Generals

MOSCOW. Feb 17 (Interfax) - The commander of the Western Military District, Yevgeny Nikiforov, and the commander of the Eastern Military District, Rustam Muradov, have been assigned the military rank of Colonel General, under a decree signed by President Vladimir Putin and published on the official website of legal information on Friday.

According to the Defense Ministry's website, Nikiforov has held the position since January 2023 and Muradov, since August 2022.

Last month the ministry said that Muradov led the Vostok (East) group in the Special Military Operation zone in Ukraine.

On Friday it emerged that Lieut. Gen. Andrei Mordvichev was appointed commander of the Central Military District, according to the defense ministry's website.

According to official data, he is replacing Col. Gen. Alexander Lapin.

On January 10 Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said he could neither confirm, nor deny the reports about Lapin's appointment as the Ground Forces' chief of staff.

According to the defense ministry's website, in January 2023 Col. Gen. Sergei Kuzovlev was appointed commander of the Southern Military District.
