EU may send mission to Moldova within security policy framework

CHISINAU. Feb 21 (Interfax) - The Council of the European Union is considering the possible deployment of a mission to Moldova within the framework of the common security and defense policy, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said.

Moldova has clearly expressed the wish for a mission to be deployed in the context of the EU common security and defense policy, the Moldova 1 public broadcaster quoted Borrell as saying after a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council. He said that the sides would continue to discuss the establishment of a mission to support the new EU candidate through stronger resilience to foreign interference and destabilization attempts.

Borrell pledged further support of the European Union for Moldova.

The higher resilience and security of Moldova is the best way to guarantee its further progress on the European track, Borrell said. Same as Ukraine, Moldova is part of the European family and its future lies with the EU, Borrell said, adding that this was absolutely clear and needed to be promoted.

The European Union is supporting Moldova via the European Peace Facility: 40 million euros were allotted for strengthening Moldova's security last year, he said.

According to Moldova 1, Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu took part in the Foreign Affairs Council's meeting. According to the Moldovan Foreign Ministry, he put emphasis on "the threats to security and the risk of destabilization in Moldova."
