Belarusian FM says Minsk interested in joining BRICS format

MINSK. Feb 22 (Interfax) - Belarus is considering its joining the BRICS format, Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Aleinik said at a ministry board meeting on Wednesday, as quoted by the Belarusian state-run news agency BelTA.

The minister welcomed the beginning of Belarus' accession to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and underlined that "the soonest formalization of full membership in the organization is yet another important task for this year." He said that the interaction with BRICS is also being stepped up.

"We should not forget about other factors relatively new to us, I mean the active preparations for the Russia-Africa forum and consideration of joining the BRICS format," Aleinik said

BRICS is an interstate group uniting Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
