Russia doesn't think suspension of participation in New START brings world closer to nuclear war - Deputy FM Ryabkov

MOSCOW. Feb 22 (Interfax) - Moscow does not think that its decision to suspend its participation in the Treaty with the United States on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (New START) is bringing the world closer to a nuclear war, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said.

"I am not of the view that the decision to suspend the effect of New START is bringing us closer to a nuclear war," Ryabkov said on the Rossiya-1 (VGTRK) television channel.

"There might be different interpretations, and the logic might be different. It's those who are continuing to foment tensions, raise the stakes, and escalate things recklessly, extremely destructively, and irresponsibly who might be bringing the world closer to a nuclear war. It's the U.S. and its satellites that are pushing the world toward the abyss of such a disaster," Ryabkov said.
