Lukashenko demands military enhance security along Belarusian border

MINSK. Feb 27 (Interfax) - Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has said that security agencies must step up efforts to protect the country's border.

"I want to underscore it once again, give you guidance and demand that you ensure the strictest discipline in military units, the Interior Ministry and the State Security Committee [KGB] [...] We have a lot of people in uniform, all of them are armed. These people are geared towards defending their homeland. And we need to make use of it - discipline and fulfillment of their duties, especially on the border," Lukashenko said at a meeting with senior officials of Belarusian security agencies in Minsk on Monday. His remarks were circulated by the First Man's Pool Telegram channel, which is close to the presidential press service.

"When I speak about the border, I do not mean only units of [Belarusian State Border Committee head] Anatoly Lappo. Rather, it is the police, it is the KGB, it is the military. All of us should see on the borders of our country any, even the slightest aggressiveness against our state in order to take appropriate measures of response," Lukashenko said.

"They [opponents of the authorities] have been taking advantage of any occasions to stir up the situation in Belarus. And they will keep doing it. I ask you and urge you to fulfill these orders," he said.
