Azerbaijan finds Armenia's use of Karabakh, East Zangezur hydropower resources illegal, seeks compensation

BAKU. Feb 27 (Interfax) - Azerbaijan on Monday launched interstate arbitration proceedings against Armenia in line with the Energy Charter Treaty, seeking redress and financial compensation for the illegal use by Armenia of energy resources in Karabakh and East Zangezur.

"On 27 February 2023, Azerbaijan launched interstate arbitration proceedings against Armenia under the Energy Charter Treaty," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

Baku has accused Armenia of illegal use of Azerbaijan's hydropower resources during the occupation of Azerbaijani territories - Karabakh and East Zangezur - from 1991 to 2020, the ministry said.

According to a notice of arbitration forwarded to Armenia, "Azerbaijan seeks redress and financial compensation from Armenia," the ministry said.

Baku asserts that over the aforementioned period, Armenia also built at least 37 additional unauthorized hydropower facilities in Azerbaijani territory and destroyed the energy infrastructure that was present there.
