WASHINGTON. Feb 27 (Interfax) - The United States has not received any notifications from Russia regarding the decision to suspend its participation in the New START Treaty, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control Mallory Stewart said.
"We haven't received any formal notifications," Stewart said in her speech at a Brookings Institution-hosted event.
The Department of State is analyzing which aspects of the treaty could be preserved, she said.
"We need to figure out what we gonna be able to do once we understand what they [the Russian side] are intending to do," Stewart said.
Washington believes that if Russia carries out an inspection of U.S. sites, Russia will be able to see for itself that its criticism toward the U.S. regarding the New START Treaty is groundless, she said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said in his address to the Federal Assembly on February 21 that Russia was suspending its participation in the New START Treaty but was not withdrawing from it.
"They want to deal us a strategic defeat and are meddling with our nuclear facilities. In this context, I have to declare today that Russia is suspending its participation in the Treaty on Strategic Offensive Arms," Putin said.
