Troops train to eliminate sabotage group during exercise on Kuril Islands - Russia's Eastern Military District

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK. April 12 (Interfax) - Troops of Russia's Eastern Military District have conducted an exercise to practice countering a simulated enemy's sabotage and reconnaissance groups on the Kuril Islands in the Sakhalin region, the Eastern Military District's press service said on Wednesday.

"According to the exercise scenario, a simulated enemy group managed to land on an island of the Kuril Ridge. To neutralize the simulated enemy, an airborne assault group was deployed to its landing site on Mil Mi-8AMTSh helicopters," it said.

Acting in adverse environmental and climatic conditions, the troops managed to land on the site, found the saboteurs, "engaged them in combat, suppressing all of their firing positions and capturing a prisoner for interrogation."

The exercise took place on several islands of the Lesser Kuril Ridge, it said.
