West not ready for establishment of Palestinian state - Russian FM

CARTHAGE, Tunisia. Dec 21 (Interfax) - Western countries do not show readiness for work on the establishment of the Palestinian state, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"Russia, Tunisia and, in general, members of the League of the Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation aim at the gradual, persistent creation of conditions for the implementation of resolutions [on the preservation of the Palestinian state]. Yet we have the impression that Western colleagues aren't so ready to make an effort towards the establishment of the Palestinian state," Lavrov told reporters after meeting with Tunisian President Kais Saied at the Carthage Palace on Thursday.

The United States "has repeatedly blocked even the simple resolution on ceasefire and humanitarian assistance currently being discussed at the Security Council," Lavrov said.

"Attempts are being made to 'drown' the issue of establishing the Palestinian state in various sorts of doubtful calls for convening one conference or another on the principles at odds with the ones formalized by Security Council resolutions," he said.

Lavrov said he had a detailed discussion of the Gaza situation with the Tunisian president and they agreed on the need for the immediate end of violence and the creation of conditions to end the "harsh" humanitarian situation.

"In the long run, it would be necessary to solve the problem of the establishment of the Palestinian state once and for all in order to rule out possible recurrences of such crises," Lavrov said.
