Kazakhstan removes Taliban from list of terrorist groups

ASTANA. Dec 29 (Interfax) - The Kazakh authorities, as announced by Kazakh Foreign Ministry spokesperson Aibek Smadiyarov, have removed the Taliban from the list of designated terrorist groups.

Smadiyarov explained that "Kazakhstan regularly reviews its list of designated terrorist entities, ensuring alignment with UN practices. According to UN Security Council resolutions, the Taliban is not included in the UN Security Council Consolidated List, which identifies organizations involved in terrorism."

Smadiyarov noted Kazakhstan's commitment to adhering strictly to decisions and resolutions made by the Security Council and the UN General Assembly in diplomatic engagements.

Originating in 1986-1987, the Taliban is labeled a terrorist organization in various countries. After governing Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, the Taliban regained control in 2021 after the U.S. troop withdrawal. Currently, the Taliban are pursuing diplomatic ties with several nations, including Kazakhstan, and actively participating in trade relations with neighboring countries.
