HONG KONG. Feb 20 (Interfax) - South Korea will start implementing tighter export controls on Russia and Belarus this week, the Yonhap news agency said.
South Korea has added 682 items with actual or potential military use to the list of goods banned from shipping to Russia and Belarus following a revision of the state regulations on trade in strategic goods, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said.
Thus, the total number of items on this list will reach 1,159. They include heavy construction equipment, rechargeable batteries, aircraft components and machinery.
Used cars with 2,000 cc engines were also included in the new list.
"It is a coordinated policy with the international community. The government will strengthen a crackdown on illegal trade," a ministry spokesperson told Yonhap.
Though the export of the aforementioned goods to the two countries is not allowed in principle, the South Korean government will review "exceptional cases" on a case-by-case basis, it said.
The new rules will take effect on Saturday, February 24, Yonhap said.
