Moscow City Court keeps Left Front coordinator Udaltsov in detention

MOSCOW. March 20 (Interfax) - The Moscow City Court has upheld the prolongation of the arrest of Left Front coordinator Sergei Udaltsov until the middle of May in a criminal case involving justification of terrorism, his lawyer Dmitry Agranovsky told Interfax.

"The Moscow City Court has upheld the Basmanny District Court ruling," Agranovsky told the agency on Wednesday.

Udaltsov's lawyers had asked the Moscow City Court to reverse the lower court's decision as illegal and unfounded.

Moscow's Basmanny District Court granted the investigators' motion and prolonged Udaltsov's arrest until May 15 on February 14.

Udaltsov was detained in January. He was charged with justification of terrorism. He denies his guilt.

According to Udaltsov, investigators charged him with posts supporting "Marxist group" members from Ufa, designated as defendants in a criminal network case.

Udaltsov was sentenced to 4.5 years in a penitentiary in 2014 on counts of organizing mass unrest on Moscow's Bolotnaya Square on May 6, 2012, and preparations for further disturbances in Russia. He served the sentence and was released from the penitentiary in August 2017.
