Russian Defense Ministry: Adm. Alexander Moiseyev appointed Russian Navy Commander (Part 2)

MOSCOW. April 2 (Interfax) - Adm. Alexander Moiseyev has been appointed commander of the Russian Navy by presidential decree, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.

Vice Adm. Konstantin Kabantsov has been appointed the new commander of the Northern Fleet, while Vice Adm. Sergei Pinchuk has been appointed commander of the Black Sea Fleet.

"During a conference call with senior officers of the Russian Armed Forces, Russian Defense Minister Army Gen. Sergei Shoigu delivered a Russian presidential decree appointing Adm. Alexander Moiseyev Navy commander, Vice Adm. Konstantin Kabantsov commander of the Northern Fleet and Vice Adm. Sergei Pinchuk commander of the Black Sea Fleet," the ministry said in a statement.

"Colleagues, congratulations! You understand the enormous responsibility that rests on your shoulders. And I hope that you will cope with the tasks set before you by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces, the Russian Defense Ministry, and of course, the country," the ministry quoted Shoigu as saying.

In March, Moiseyev attended official events as acting Russian Navy commander.

Adm. Nikolai Yevmenov has been Russian Navy commander since May 2019.

Until recently, Moiseyev was in command of the Russian Northern Fleet.

Kabantsov served as first deputy commander and chief of staff of the Northern Fleet.

Pinchuk previously commanded the Caspian Flotilla.

Moiseyev was born in the Kaliningrad region on April 16, 1962. In 1987, he graduated from the Popov Higher Naval School of Radioelectronics in St. Petersburg. He graduated with distinction from the Kuznetsov Naval Academy in 2003 and graduated with distinction from the Military Academy of the Russian General Staff in 2011.

Moiseyev served in the Northern Fleet in various submarine positions, from group engineer of a combat unit and commander of a missile submarine ship to commander of a submarine formation and commander of submarine forces.

In 1998, under the command of Moiseyev, the Novomoskovsk nuclear submarine successfully launched a satellite into Earth orbit for the first time in history.

In November 2017, Moiseyev was appointed Deputy Chief of the Russian General Staff. In June 2018, he became commander of the Black Sea Fleet. In May 2019, Moiseyev headed the Russian Northern Fleet.

In 2011, the Russian president awarded Moiseyev, then Capt. 1st rank, with the title of Hero of the Russian Federation for courage and heroism shown on duty. Moiseyev has two Orders of Courage, an Order for Military Merit, the medal of the Order for Merit to the Fatherland 2nd class, and ministerial orders and medals.
