UNSC may only be reformed through broad consensus - Putin

HANOI. June 20 (Interfax) - The situation in the world requires that the United Nations Security Council be reformed, but this can only be done on the basis of broad consensus, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

"As regards reforming the UN and UN Security Council, this is a problem that goes far beyond those issues that you have raised now. The Security Council emerged as a key UN institution after the World War II. The situation in the world is changing. This requires that this international institution undergo some kind of reforming," Putin told reporters.

It is important that "this reform relies on broad consensus," he said.

"If this decision is a result of a group of countries or one country acting behind the scenes, this will bring nothing good to the international community. This will simply lose this instrument for resolution of disputes," he said.

"No matter how hard, whatever the cost, the Security Council still works," he said.

Putin emphasized that Russia could support the UN Security Council's reform but only on the basis of broad consensus.
