Two men convicted in Murmansk for arson at military recruitment office

MURMANSK. Aug 13 (Interfax) - The Northern fleet military court has ruled in a case over treason and terrorism, the press service for the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Directorate in the Murnansk region said in a statement on Tuesday.

Defendant 1 has been sentenced to 17 years of imprisonment, defendant 2, to 14 years. Both will serve their time initial in prison and later a high-security facility, the statement said.

The court found that the paid had been involved in the February 2023 arson of an army recruitment office in Murmansk.

According to the inquiry, defendant 1, "during correspondence with an employee of Ukraine's Defense Ministry Main Intelligence Directorate known to him earlier," decided to take action against the security of Russia.

He instigated defendant 2 to join Ukraine's Armed Forces and induced him to commit arson outside a military recruitment office in Murmansk, the FSB Directorate said.

Later, searches of defendant 2's home address led to the discovery of more than 108 grams of cannabis.

As a result, defendant 1 was found guilty of treason and inducing a person to aid and abet terrorism.

Defendant 2 was found guilty of committing an act of terrorism resulting in considerable material damage, and illegal acquisition, storage, transportation of plants containing narcotic or psychotropic substances in large quantities.
