Russia's Admiral Golovko frigate holds drills in English Channel

MOSCOW. Nov 12 (Interfax) - The Russian Northern Fleet's Admiral Golovko frigate conducted air defense and anti-submarine warfare exercises in the English Channel before heading to designated areas of the Atlantic Ocean, the fleet's press service said in a statement on Tuesday.

"While passing through the channel, the crew of the Russian frigate held an exercise focusing on air defense and anti-submarine defense for a detachment of ships, as well as a number of drills involving rescue operations with the use of deck-based aircraft - a [Kamov] Ka-27 helicopter," it said.

In addition, the frigate conducted a counter-terrorism exercise to practice counteracting drones and unmanned boats.

The Admiral Golovko embarked on a long-distance deployment from the Northern Fleet's base in Severomorsk on November 2. The main objective of the voyage "is to demonstrate the flag and to ensure naval presence in operationally important areas of the long-range oceanic zone," the Northern Fleet said.
