MOSCOW. Jan 17 (Interfax) - Russia and Iran intend to bolster interaction on security and defense, according to a treaty on comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
"The Contracting Parties seek to have deeper and broader relations in all areas of mutual interest, bolster cooperation in the field of security and defense, closely coordinate their activities at the regional and global level consistent with lasting, comprehensive, and strategic partnership," the document published on the Kremlin website says.
To develop military cooperation between specialized agencies, Russia and Iran shall prepare and implement relevant agreements within the framework of a working group on military cooperation, it said.
"Military cooperation between the Contracting Parties embraces a broad spectrum of aspects, including exchanges of military and expert delegations, calls of military ships and vessels at ports of the Contracting Parties, military personnel training, exchanges of cadets and instructors, participating in international defense exhibitions organized by the Contracting Parties through coordination between the Contracting Parties, organizing joint sports competitions, cultural, and other events, and conducting joint naval operations for help and rescue purposes, as well as combating maritime piracy and armed banditry," it said.
Russia and Iran also intend to work closely together in conducting joint military drills on each other's territories and outside them in compliance with international law.
Moscow and Tehran intend to consult each other and cooperate in opposing common military and security threats, both bilateral and regional ones.
"The Contracting Parties reiterate their commitment to developing military-technical cooperation based on the relevant agreements between them, taking into consideration mutual interests and their international obligations, and view such cooperation as an important element of maintaining regional and global security," it said.
