MOSCOW. Feb 20 (Interfax) - Russian courts acquitted 1,800 and convicted 543,000 defendants in 2024, Russian Supreme Court Chairperson Irina Podnosova said.
"Upon hearing criminal cases, courts convicted 543,000 persons and terminated the prosecution of 126,000 others, including 1,800 persons who were acquitted," Podnosova said at a conference of judges.
Only 29% of those convicted were given real-time prison sentences, and the other 71% received alternative types of punishment not involving imprisonment or were granted exemptions from punishment, she said.
Courts received 97,000 motions on taking defendants into pretrial custody and granted 88% of them in 2024, Podnosova said. That said, the number of motions from investigators to extend pretrial detentions continued to decline last year, she said. "Compared to 2023, their number declined by 7%," she said.
Courts placed 16,000 people under house arrest and prohibited certain actions for nearly 5,000 others last year, she said.
