MOSCOW. May 21 (Interfax) - The State Duma ratified the extradition treaty between the Russian Federation and the Kingdom of Thailand at a meeting on Wednesday.
The treaty, signed in Moscow on October 23, 2024, compels the sides to extradite to each other persons located in the territory of the requested party and wanted by the requesting party for the purpose of criminal prosecution, sentencing or execution of a sentence for a crime entailing extradition.
"There used to be situations when a person committed a crime in Russia and went into hiding in a place with a warm climate, such as the Seychelles or Thailand. This will not be possible now. What is more, such a person will be extradited from Thailand to the Russian Federation," State Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said after the ratification.
The extradition treaty between the Russian Federation and the Kingdom of Thailand, submitted for ratification by the Russian president "will close any loopholes that have existed until today and to fight crime both in our country and in other states, which have attracted kingpins and criminals by their climate and the hideout opportunity," he said.
"We are grateful that all factions, despite different political views and programs, have backed the president's legislative initiatives. This is a truly important contribution of the State Duma to the fight against crime, international crime at that," Volodin said.
