U.S. helps equip Ukrainian border unit near Moldova

KYIV. March 28 (Interfax-AVN) - A ceremonial transfer of U.S. technical aid to the border detachment in the town of Kotovsk in Ukraine's Odesa region took place on Monday as part of a project called "Strengthening Border Management on the Ukrainian-Moldovan Border," the Ukrainian border service's spokesman announced.

The Kotovsk border detachment received equipment for 100 passport control booths, 12 stationary metal detectors, 48 photo-video document registration units, 68 units for vehicle inspections, 79 radio stations, 144 radar control devices, 30 vehicles, night-vision devices, binoculars, and safes, worth a total of $700,000.

The Ukrainian border command said it hopes the U.S. aid will help reinforce the border section with Transdniestria.

The project is being carried out by the U.S. Raytheon Technical Services company.

The Ukrainian-Moldovan border is 1,222 km long and the Transdniestrian section is more than 405 km long.
