MOSCOW. April 1 (Interfax-AVN) - Ten Russian Emergency Situations Ministry rescuers and a Tsentrospas rescue team flew to Indonesia's Nias Island on Friday morning to assess the situation there following the recent devastating earthquake and select a suitable location for a mobile hospital.
The rescuers and the mobile hospital were airlifted to Indonesia's earthquake-devastated area by the Emergency Situations Ministry's Ilyushin Il-76 plane, ministry spokesman Viktor Beltsov told Interfax
UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination expert Vladimir Boreiko has arrived in Indonesia as well, Beltsov said.
Andrei Legoshin, deputy director of the Emergency Situations Ministry's operational control department, said in an earlier interview that some people trapped under the rubble could still be rescued. "The conditions in which people were trapped under the rubble make it possible for them to survive for from seven to ten days," he said.
Extra forces will be sent to the earthquake-affected area should it prove necessary, he said.
