630 servicemen missing in N. Caucasus unknown

MOSCOW. April 8 (Interfax-AVN) - The fate of 630 federal servicemen, Interior Ministry officials, and civilian specialists who have gone missing in the North Caucasus since 1994 is still unknown, member of the Russian presidential commission on prisoners of war, internees, and the missing Nikolai Bezborodov told Interfax-Military News Agency.

"About 300 of these people went missing from 1994 to 1996, and probably many of them are not alive now," said Bezborodov, who is also a State Duma deputy.

The fate of over 390 people who went missing in the North Caucasus has been determined, Bezborodov said. The remains of 305 people are undergoing identification, and about 100 of these bodies were exhumed in 2001-2004.

"The commission is working to expand the base for identification research through scaling up search and exhumation activities in the North Caucasus," he noted.
