MOSCOW. April 8 (Interfax-AVN) - Tbilisi does not plan to make any compromises in negotiations on the withdrawal of Russian military bases from Georgia, a Tbilisi source close to the Georgian delegation told Interfax-Military News Agency by phone on Friday.
"The Georgian side is insisting and, according to my knowledge, will insist on the shortest possible term for the withdrawal of the Russian military bases from Akhalkalaki and Batumi," the source said.
"Georgia is expecting Russia to show political will for the bases' withdrawal," Georgian Parliamentary Legal Committee deputy chief Giga Bokeria told Interfax-AVN on Friday.
"Russia should demonstrate a readiness to withdraw the bases by signing a corresponding document during the negotiations," he said.
"Otherwise, the resolution passed by the Georgian Parliament in March that requires necessary measures to be taken by the government against the Russian military bases will come into force on May 15," he said.
Bokeria, who is one of the authors of the March resolution, said that the optimal final date for the bases withdrawal would be January 1, 2007.
"We have little optimism about Russia's position" on the bases' withdrawal, he said. However, "I wouldn't say that this round of negotiations is the last chance to reach a compromise, there is enough time to settle technical issues," he said.
