ROSTOV-ON-DON. April 12 (Interfax-AVN) - The North Caucasus Military District Air Defense Forces have started a tactical exercise, involving live fire, at the Kapustin Yar firing range in the Astrakhan region, Colonel Igor Konashenkov, Assistant Commander of the North Caucasus Military District, told Interfax-Military News Agency on Tuesday.
"The exercise is supervised by Colonel General Sergei Makarov, Deputy Commander of the North Caucasus Military District," Konashenkov said.
He noted that the exercise was aimed at refining air defense unit combat deployment, and preparation and conduct of combat operations as part of an air defense task force.
"For instance, on Wednesday and Thursday air defense units will be deployed in the combat area, conduct aerial reconnaissance, and counter enemy precision-guided munitions air strikes in the electronic warfare environment," Konashenkov said.
He also said that at the last stage of the exercise air defense battalions will engage training air targets with live munitions, fired by Buk and Osa air defense systems.
