Integration of all Russian air engine manufacturers inexpedient – expert

MOSCOW. April 22 (Interfax-AVN) - It would be unwise to form an integrated structure of the whole variety of air engine building companies in Russia, Viktor Chiuko, President of the Aircraft Engine Building Union (ASSAD), told Interfax-Military News Agency Friday.

"We are developing a marketing economy, and the competitiveness is the mainstay of any market. Therefore, at least three large air engine manufacturers should be preserved in the country. The competitiveness among them will result in the fact that engines will become cheaper and more reliable, and will have longer service lives," Chuiko said during the High Technologies of the 21st Century exhibition that is to finish in Moscow Friday.

"Engine-builders are looking forward to integration. And several integral structures have already been formed, including the Saturn research and production association that brings together five large enterprises," he said.

According to Chuiko, the Moscow-based Salyut machine-building enterprise is also going to merge with some Russian and foreign companies.

"One needs common business and common projects to develop an integrated structure. Only in this case will the integration be effective. As of now, there are no mechanisms that can unite the enterprises in the industry. That is why I do not think it is necessary to form a single integrated company," he added.

ASSAD unites over 100 developers and manufacturers of aircraft engines in Russia and other countries.
