CHISINAU. April 22 (Interfax-AVN) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has suggested holding free and democratic elections to the Supreme Council of Transdniestria as one of the steps towards settling the conflict over that self-proclaimed republic.
Speaking at a summit of the GUUAM regional organization in Chisinau on Friday, Yushchenko explained a plan involving seven measures to solving the crisis.
"In particular, Ukraine suggests that free and democratic elections to the Supreme Council of Transdniestria be held in the near future to ensure democracy in Transdniestria," he said.
Ukraine also urges the EU, the OSCE, Russia, the U.S., and other democratic countries to control the elections and called on the Transdniestrian administration to provide conditions for the work of "monitoring committees," Yushchenko said.
