GROZNY. April 29 (Interfax-AVM) -- A group of unidentified gunmen attacked a police car in Chechnya's Grozny rural district, stealing 1.6 million rubles ($57,620), a source in Chechen law-enforcement agencies told Interfax-Military News Agency on Friday.
"Four unidentified men wearing camouflaged uniform and masks and carrying assault rifles tapped the road near the village of Pionerskoye in the Grozny rural district at 1:05 p.m. Moscow time (0905 GMT) on April 28 and stopped an UAZ car owned by the Shatoi district police department. The attackers managed to get hold of the money totaling 1.6 million rubles, which were being transported in the car and were intended for paying salaries of local policemen. They also obtained policemen's assault rifle and pistol," the source said.
Having wounded an accountant, who was in the car, the attackers escaped from the scene. The wounded person was taken to hospital, and work is underway to detect and detain the criminals.
The source also said that two earlier detained militants confessed to committing crimes on Thursday. One of them confessed to taking part in the attack on the village of Meskety in September 2002, when the local administration office was blasted and arms stolen from policemen. The other confessed to taking part in firing at an UAZ vehicle owned by the Shali district military commandant's office. The incident occurred in the village of Shali in September 2000.
