Conscription campaign starts in Moldova

CHISINAU. May 3 (Interfax-AVN) - Over 3,000 people will be enlisted for military service during the conscription campaign that started in Moldova.

An official of the Moldovan Defense Ministry press service told Interfax-Military News Agency Tuesday, that 1,400 young men will be enlisted for service with the National Army, 950 more with the border guard forces, and 900 with the Carabineer Force.

Also, 125 graduates of higher educational establishments will put on uniform for the period of three months, 50 of whom will undergo service as carabineers, 50 as border guards, and 25 as servicemen of the National Army, he said.

Under the standing legislation, the military service in Moldova is compulsory. The young men who refuse to serve in the army for valid excuses are liable for alternative state service. About 1,500 people will undergo alternative service this year.

The term of compulsory military service in Moldova is 12 months. The Conscription campaign is to last till June 30.
