Two militants detained in Chechnya

KHANKALA. May 4 (Interfax-AVN) - A member of Ruslan Gelayev's guerilla group has been detained in Chechnya, spokesman for the federal forces in the North Caucasus Major General Ilya Shabalkin told Interfax on Wednesday.

The militant was detained following a tip-off from several women, who spotted an unfamiliar man while they were walking in the Samashki forest in Chechnya's Achkhoi-Martan district. The women told a federal force commander about the man. The guerilla was detained and a suicide-bomber's belt with five improvised grenades and a fake passport were confiscated from him.

"It has been established that the detained militant was on the wanted list and was a member of one of the groups commanded by Ruslan Gelayev, who was eliminated in 2004," Shabalkin said.

Another guerrilla was detained in the village of Starye Atagi in the Grozny rural district. The militant, a member of Isa Sadayev's group, is believed to have stolen vehicles and personal belongings from civilians, the spokesman said. Among other crimes, the detained guerilla and his accomplices are suspected of involvement in the attack on a Nurenergo joint-stock company official.
