Kyrgyz border guard service stepping up anti-terrorist operations

MOSCOW. May 18 (Interfax-AVN) - The Kyrgyz Border Guard Service is stepping up measures, aimed at preventing terrorists from coming to the country, as well as countering aggression of international extremist organizations.

"The decision is based on an increase in the scale, types, and intensity of threats to the Kyrgyz state border," a source in Kyrgyz law-enforcement agencies told Interfax-Military News Agency on Wednesday.

He noted that the Border Guard Service had reported an increase in activities of international terrorist and extremist organizations in its area of responsibility.

The Islamic Liberation Party, the Turkestan Islamic Party (former Uzbekistan Islamic Movement), the Eastern Turkestan Islamic Movement, Taliban and a number of other organizations have not given up the idea of destabilizing the situation in Central Asia, the source said.

According to him, such organizations aim to create tensions, involving more and more people in the conflict and capitalizing on social and economic problems within Central Asia states.

"Given the coming summer, upcoming parliamentary elections in Afghanistan, slated for July, as well as existing preconditions for deterioration of the military, political, and economic environment within the country, Central Asia may face addition security threats in summer," the source said.

Experts of the Border Guard Service do not rule out possible sabotages and terrorist attacks against crucial facilities, officials, and citizens.

Border guards pay special attention to detecting arms caches near the state border in southern parts of the country, and analyzing terrorist activities in Uzbekistan, the source pointed out.
