MOSCOW. June 2 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia and the U.S. have a lot of common interests in the international security sphere, Andrei Kokoshin, chairman of the State Duma committee for CIS affairs and ties with compatriots, told Interfax-Military News Agency on Thursday.
"Meetings between State Duma members and a delegation of U.S. congressmen led by Henry John Hyde, IL, chairman of the House Committee on International Relations, showed once again that Russia and the U.S. have a lot of common security interests in international relations," said Kokoshin, who is a former secretary of the Russian Security Council.
The interests "are primarily connected with combating extremist organizations that use terrorism as a political tool, as well as with solving the WMD nonproliferation problem," the lawmaker explained.
According to him, Russia and the U.S. should pay special attention to preventing weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, from getting into the hands of terrorists and terrorist organizations.
"The adoption of the UN Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism became possible because efforts of Russia, which initiated the convention, were supported by the U.S.," Kokoshin stressed.
