Chechen villagers detained for carrying money for militants

MOSCOW. June 9 (Interfax-AVN) - Eleven residents of the village of Borozdinovskaya in Chechnya's Shelkovskaya district, who were detained last Sunday, were carrying money for illegal armed units, Shelkovskaya district police chief Shamil Magomayev told Interfax by phone on Thursday.

"The police have information that some Borozdinovskaya villagers had connections with militants and provided assistance in the transfer of large funds from abroad," he said.

"Messengers were delivering money to Borozdinovskaya, and it was distributed between ringleaders from there," he said.

A police operation was held in Borozdinovskaya and eleven people were detained on suspicion of assisting the militants, head of the Shelkovskaya district administration Khusein Nutayev told Interfax on Monday.

The media said the police operation had caused tensions to escalate in the village, which is mostly populated by ethnic Dagestanis.

Chechen Security Council Secretary Rudnik Dudayev said the media reports were provocative. "The media claims of an alleged clash between the Dagestanis and the Chechen police are provocative and unfounded," he said.

"Chechnya cannot have different standards of police operations for Dagestanis, Russians and Chechens," Dudayev said.
