Six policemen killed in Chechen attack - Kurchaloi police

GROZNY. June 10 (Interfax-AVN) - Six police officers from the Tver region were killed and another two injured in a guerilla attack in the North Caucasus republic of Chechnya, a Kurchaloi district police source told Interfax on Friday.

"The incident occurred in an area between the town of Kurchaloi and the village of Niki-Khita in the Shali district, near Checkpoint No. 92. The truck came under automatic weapons and grenade fire," the source said.

Six policemen died on the spot and another two, among them the chief-of-staff of the provisional strategic group for the Kurchaloi district, sustained injuries and were hospitalized.

The Tver region policemen were due to leave Chechnya on June 15, the source said.

Law enforcement sources told Interfax earlier on Friday that seven police officers had been killed and another injured in a guerilla attack in Chechnya.

"At 12:35 p.m. on June 9, an unidentified individual armed with a grenade launcher opened fire on an UAZ truck with interior affairs department officials when it was traveling along the Kurchaloi-Avtury highway. The attacker was hiding in a forested area. As a result of a direct hit, seven policemen were killed and another sustained injuries and was hospitalized," one of the sources said.
