GROZNY. June 10 (Interfax-AVN) - Federal troops and Chechen Interior Ministry units are hunting guerillas who attacked a truck carrying police officers from the Tver region in the Shali district, sources in the federal forces in the North Caucasus told Interfax on Friday.
The attack was "most likely staged by guerillas led by a man known as Sultan Geliskhanov. Under Dzhokhar Dudayev, he headed the state security department of the republic of Chechnya-Ichkeria for some time," Kurchaloi district police sources told Interfax.
Seven Tver region policemen were killed and another was injured when their truck came under automatic weapons and grenade fire in an area between the town of Kurchaloi and the village of Niki-Khita on Friday.
The police officers were due to leave Chechnya on June 15.
