MOSCOW. July 4 (Interfax-AVN) - Claims by the Sharia group that it committed the July 1 terrorist act in Makhachkala may be false but they cannot be ignored, former Federal Security Service director and incumbent head of the State Duma Committee on Veterans' Affairs Nikolai Kovalyov told Interfax-Military News Agency Monday.
"Terrorists of all kinds frequently assume responsibility for terrorist acts, no matter who perpetrates them. They have two reasons: firstly, they want to draw attention and, secondly, they want to get more funding from international sponsors," he said.
Kovalyov said law enforcement agencies should pay attention to the group's claim that it was behind similar terrorist acts planned in central Russia.
"Law enforcement agencies should realize that terrorist acts in central Russia are possible and preventive measures must be all-inclusive," he said.
