Draft document says Russia must strengthen defense

MOSCOW. July 21 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia should review its approach to evaluating foreign threats and take additional measures to strengthen its defense potential, says a draft document on national security strategy.

"A new approach is needed to evaluate outside dangers and threats, and a rethink of military-strategic views on the nature and means of possible warfare," says the document, which the Foreign and Defense Policy Council discussed on Thursday.

The draft strategy says there is now no direct military threat to Russia. "Not a single country poses a direct military threat to Russia at present," it reads.

However, the nation may face various threats "resulting from the escalation of conflicts, primarily in adjacent regions, the expansion of terrorism, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction," it says.

The report's authors believe that "influential political circles in certain countries regard Russia as a systemic obstacle to their objectives and are trying to apply methods of propaganda and indirect pressure against Russia."

"Urgent additional measures are needed to strengthen Russia's defense potential," reads the draft.

The Foreign and Defense Policy Council is a non-governmental organization that promotes the development and implementation of advancement strategies, foreign and defense policies, the strengthening of the Russian state and civil society.
