Cherkessk. Aug 24 (Interfax-AVN) - A school siege planned by terrorists has been prevented in Russia's internal republic of Karachayevo-Cherkessia, republic President Mustafa Batdiyev told a conference on ways to prevent terror attacks.
"A terrorist attack has been prevented here. The terrorists were planning a school siege similar to the Beslan hostage crisis," Batdiyev said.
The Federal Security Service's department for Karachayevo Cherkessia has confirmed that a school siege was prevented in Karachayevo-Cherkessia at the end of the school year. No further details were disclosed "in the interests of the investigation."
The republic's Interior Minister Nikolai Osyak said that law enforcement agencies have uncovered about 150 Wahhabites in the republic, most of them young people aged from 16 to 20.
