Missile defense systems may affect international stability – China

BEIJING. Sept 1 (Interfax-AVN) - The development of missile defense systems may have a negative effect on international stability, Director of the Chinese Foreign Ministry's Arms Control and Disarmament Department Zhang Yan told a Thursday press conference in Beijing.

"China thinks that the development of missile defense systems may affect stability in the world and international strategic stability," he said.

They will also "have a negative effect on interstate relations and regional security and may trigger the proliferation of missiles," he said.

"Therefore we hope that countries will adopt a reserved policy," Zhang said.

"China objects to any attempt by any country to involve Taiwan in missile defense systems," he said.
