MOSCOW. Sept 19 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian lawmakers welcome North Korea's commitment to rejoin in the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons as soon as possible, Major General Nikolai Bezborodov, member of the State Duma defense committee, said on Monday.
"Common sense prevailed at the talks on the nuclear problem of the Korean peninsula, and North Korea abandons development of nuclear weapons in exchange for getting hold of the peaceful atom," Bezborodov told Interfax-Military News Agency.
"It is the position that Russia has been stuck to throughout the talks," he stressed.
"The defense committee of the previous Duma said many times that North Korea can be given the peaceful atom in exchange for banning the military nuclear program. It is symbolic that this decision was made after UN members started signing the document, once again initiated by Russia, on countering nuclear terrorism. Nonproliferation of military nuclear technologies is one of the best means in this field," Bezborodov said.
"Russian lawmakers welcome North Korea's commitment to rejoin the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons as soon as possible and to restore IAEA control over nuclear developments," he stressed.
