MOSCOW. Sept 29 (Interfax-AVN) - A total of 32,000 apartments will be built for servicemen of the Russian army and navy in 2006, Colonel General Anatoly Grebenyuk, head of the Defense Ministry's housing and accommodation service, said on Thursday.
"The housing fund for Russian army servicemen currently consists of service housing and the apartments that are being handed over to servicemen's property. A total of 32,000 apartments for servicemen are expected to be built next year," Grebenyuk told reporters.
According to him, it is possible to solve the housing problem in the Armed Forces over a period of five years.
"The Defense Ministry, in case it gets stable and full funding, plans to provide housing to all servicemen before 2010," Grebenyuk said.
He stressed that the housing problem is the most acute for servicemen stationed in Moscow and the Moscow region.
"About 20,000 officers and warrant officers are awaiting apartments in Moscow and 18,000 servicemen in the Moscow region," the general noted.
He said that 5,200 apartments will be obtained for the Moscow garrison from all sources in 2005.
