MOSCOW. Nov 11 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the self-proclaimed republic of Transdniestria should be given reliable guarantees of its future status within a unified Moldova.
"As for the Transdniestrian problem, a solution to it requires an agreement between Chisinau and Tiraspol on a viable model for their common state, within which Transdniestria will be granted reliable status guarantees," Lavrov said in an interview with Romania's Ziua newspaper.
"This agreement is a matter for Chisinau and Tiraspol," he said.
"The task of those whom they have invited as mediators - the Russian Federation, Ukraine and the OSCE - is to form an atmosphere of trust between the conflicting parties and contribute ideas to the settlement fund that has been built over all these years," the minister said.
"Generally speaking, this process is transparent to the international community and European political structures because discussions on issues related to a solution to the Transdniestrian conflict proceed in parallel with the creation of prerequisites for stability and security in this area of mutual interests," Lavrov said.
