Russia supplies helicopters, equipment to Afghanistan

MOSCOW. Nov 14 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian military transport planes have delivered Mi-24 helicopters, electronic warfare and communication equipment and spare parts for transport planes to Afghanistan.

"Two Mi-24 helicopters, technical equipment, two R-934 radio sets, means of communication and spare parts for An-26 and An-32 transport aircraft were brought to Kabul by An-22 Antei and An-124 Ruslan cargo planes on November 12 and 13," a Russian Defense Ministry official told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.

"Two more Mi-24 helicopters and two L-39 training planes are expected to be airlifted to Kabul shortly. An-26 and An-32 planes will arrive in Afghanistan on their own," the official said.

"Six helicopter engines, auxiliary gear for operating aircraft, communication and control equipment, 40 trucks, several dozen cross-country motor vehicles and spare parts are to be delivered to Afghanistan before the end of the year," the military said.

"This consignment includes new equipment, as well as equipment from the stock available to the Russian Defense Ministry and Afghan armed forces. The Mi-24 helicopters and transport planes belong to the Afghan army but underwent repair in Russia," the ministry official said.

He said that the military property and equipment will be given to Afghanistan for free under a program to render military-technical aid to Kabul. The consignment to be delivered in 2005 has an estimated value of about $30 million. Aid rendered since 2002 is estimated at over $100 million.

Weapons and ammunition do not figure on the list of supplies to be delivered to Afghanistan, the official said.
