Wahhabite militant arrested in Dagestan

MAKHACHKALA. Nov 28 (Interfax-AVN) - A resident of the village of Yaryk-Shi in Dagestan's Novolakskoye district has been arrested in a sweep operation. He is suspected of active involvement in a criminal armed group.

Shamil Akhmedov, 25, an ethnic Chechen and a follower of Wahhabism, was arrested in his home in Yaryk-Shi at 7 a.m. Moscow time (0400 GMT) on November 26 by Dagestani and Russian police, the Dagestani Interior Ministry's press service told Interfax.

A TT pistol and cartridges were seized during a search of Akhmedov's home.

A probe has been launched into Akhmedov's previous activities, the press service said.
