Kyrgyzstan wants assessment of U.S. base's impact on environment

MOSCOW. Nov 29 (Interfax-AVN) - Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev has called for discussions on environmental issues related to the presence of U.S. forces at Manas Airport outside Bishkek.

"Environmental protection concerns that are being voiced by the country's public over the activities of the United States' military infrastructure at our country's Manas Airport are justified and need to be discussed together with our American partners," Bakiyev told Interfax on Monday.

"Environmental protection matters have been put on the agenda of negotiations with the United States," the president said.

"I hope that a solution will be found in a new agreement on conditions for the U.S. military base's deployment in the republic of Kyrgyzstan," he said.
